March in Crested Butte is all about dancing, fun competitions, prizes, delicious treats and costumes!
First up is the 4th annual Miner’s Ball, held at the Crested Butte Mountain Heritage Museum on Friday, March 3 from 6-10 pm. That same night is the Crested Butte Ski Patrol’s Wall to Wall Party, benefiting community members in need. The fundraiser will be held at the Talk of the Town starting at 7 pm. Raffle tickets are on sale in the Axtel building and at Patrol Headquarters. Prizes include skis, snowboards, tons of related gear, a ‘17/’18 season pass, and the coveted GOLDEN BEACON! One of the most anticipated tasting events of the year is Colorado Crafted – which features the best breweries, distilleries and local fare that Colorado has to offer. Held Saturday, March 4 from 2 – 6 pm, enjoy delicious beverages, tasty treats and live music. Tickets can be purchased HERE.
Film lovers can get excited about Ski Bummin’, a movie filmed by ski bums about ski bums during the epic winter of ‘96-’97. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the movie, and it will be shown on Saturday, March 4 at the Center for the Arts (crestedbuttearts.org). Doors open at 7 pm and the movie starts at 8 pm.
The following weekend of March 10-11, the BANFF Mountain Film Festival World Tour returns to Crested Butte at the Center for the Arts. Doors open at 7 pm both nights, and your $20 donations help support the Crested Butte Search and Rescue Team.
The 40th Annual Red Lady Salvation Ball is a double-header this year with the Red Lady Ramblers playing on Friday, March 9 and the String Cheese Incident playing on Saturday, March 10 at the Eldo. Hosted by High Country Conservation Advocates, there will be appetizers, raffle prizes, and the crowning of the new Red Lady. More information can be found at hccacb.org
March is also full of competitions, beginning with the USASA Boardercross & Skiercross March 3 to 5 and the IFSA Junior Nationals Freeskiing Competition March 10 to 12 (freeskiers.org). Locals can compete in the Alpine Orthopaedics Town Race Series on March 8, 15 and 22, and the infamous Al Johnson Telemark Race on March 19. Finally, Friday, March 24 will be the start of the GORE-TEX Grand Traverse with teams traveling overnight from Crested Butte to Aspen. Closing out the month is KBUT’s Soul Train night, held at the Elevation Hotel on Friday, March 31 (kbut.org). Grab your disco duds, platform shoes, afro wigs and dance the night away. Who knows? You may even be crowned the King or Queen of Soul!
